“SECURING THE LONG-TERM FUTURE OF BOA VISTA (CABO VERDE) AS A KEY BREEDING SITE FOR LOGGERHEAD TURTLES”

The project aims to ensure that illegal harvesting of eggs and adults at priority nesting sites in Boa Vista is eradicated, and that the impacts of natural events and human disturbance on priority nesting sites are minimised.

The first strategy aims to ensure that knowledge about turtles is improved, shared and accessible for conservation planning and management, through a comprehensive research and capacity building programme. It also aims to ensure that key stakeholders are aware of the importance of turtle and ecosystem conservation and to raise awareness among local communities of the importance of sea turtle and ecosystem conservation. Strengthening the legal and policy framework will ensure that national laws and regulations and regional agreements are conducive to the protection of turtles and important turtle sites. Strengthening the enforcement of laws and regulations will also ensure that key actors are aware of the need and have the capacity to enforce laws and regulations.

Finally, strengthening site protection by ensuring that local communities benefit from sea turtle conservation through direct involvement of nationals in projects and the implementation of local initiatives that generate sustainable income.
